Electronic prescriptions
Reference: This news release dated 1/27/2005 states: "HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt today announced new proposed regulations that will support electronic prescriptions for Medicare when the prescription drug benefit takes effect in January 2006. " Stratford's policy is to support any federally mandated EDI transaction set. We plan to support this standard as soon as the specifications are published. If you are interested in being able to transmit prescriptions directly from the Stratford screens, please let us know so we can put your name on our list. We will keep the people on this list informed of any updates. The number of people that express interest will determine how many resources we dedicate to this. The proposed e-prescribing regulations will adopt standards for:
At the time this is written, Stratford plans to offer the ability to transmit prescriptions at no additional charge. We have been accepted into the SureScripts program, and we are planning to have this available in 2009. We do not yet have any firm information, dates or even 'if' transmitting prescriptions will be available. The items below are possible at an added cost. At this time we have not had anyone who wanted to pay for this service. These are not available from the government/Surescripts, etc and (at least at this time) must be purchased from 3rd parties. Maybe the pharmacies will offer this information in the future with the transmitting function?
As part of the MMA, Medicare will require drug plans participating in the new prescription drug benefit to support electronic prescribing. Do not waste money on a proprietary prescribing system which is not based on this standard. Electronic prescribing, or "e-prescribing," enables a physician to transmit a prescription electronically to the patient's choice of pharmacy. Having access to this information at the point of care makes writing, filling and receiving prescriptions quicker and easier, and it also makes it possible for physicians and pharmacies to make informed decisions about appropriate and lower-cost therapeutically-equivalent alternative medications. e-prescribing can improve patient safety and reduce avoidable health care costs by decreasing prescription errors due to hard-to-read physician handwriting. News: Stratford has coded the data tables and you can enter prescription information now and your computer can print/fax the prescription now. Stratford clients are able to write prescriptions from screens inside the Stratford program with full access to electronic medical records, billing information and any other information that is related to a specific patient. This is not a 3rd-party application 'glommed' onto the Stratford program. This is an original Stratford, fully integrated software application. The current version of Stratford Software has this capability although the transmission capability will not be fully activated until sometime later (see the notice above). Selected Stratford clients may now be granted access to the screens inside a 'test' account (which include their 'real' patient accounts) if they agree to give feedback to Stratford. If you are interested, please send an email to support@stratfordsoftware.com. If you are now using the Stratford program to write your prescriptions, you are eligible to have all the FDA approved drugs available on your computer. This is available at no additional charge. We will update our web site at least weekly from the FDA and make that information available in a form that is usable by the Stratford program. You must update this list at least monthly. If you have this list, your prescription will be printed with the drug codes that should eliminate most/many of the pharmacy call backs. For More Information Contact:
